The services and amenities provided by an assisted living community largely impact the quality of life for seniors. To rank states in this category, we total the number of services and amenities available in each assisted living community within a state. We then average each state’s services and amenities and compare it against the national average. States with communities that offer more unique amenities than the national average rank higher in this category.
To assign each state a score, we total some of the following services and amenities typically provided at assisted living communities:
● On-site health care services
● Personal and specialized care plans
● Dining services and wellness programs
● Social activities, common areas, and luxe amenities

Cost is an important factor for families when it comes to assisted living, especially when operating within a specific budget. To rank states for affordability, we first calculated the median total cost of assisted living in each state using cost data provided by communities in our partner network. We then compared those calculated costs to our national average cost of assisted living. States with pricing higher than the national average ranked lower, while states with lower pricing ranked higher.

To rank states for affordability, we first calculated both the total median cost of assisted living in each state, as well as the national average, and then compared the two. To do this, we used real final costs families paid, according to our community partners. States that rank high for affordability had total median pricing below the national average, while states that rank lower had pricing above the national average.

Besides touring, reading verified reviews from actual families is a great way to evaluate the quality of an assisted living community. By including this as a ranking factor for states, we ensure that families’ feedback about communities helps other families and caregivers make informed decisions about a loved one’s care.

On our site, families can submit ratings for assisted living communities based on cleanliness, friendliness, meals and dining, care services, activities, staff, and value for cost. We use these ratings to average each community’s ratings and assign a 10-point proprietary review score. Then, we rank states in this category by calculating an average for each state using the review scores from all of a state’s communities. States with an overall score closer to 10 rank highest in this category.

It’s important for seniors to have easy access to health care, so this category measures the availability of health care services and options for each state’s senior population. To estimate each state’s score, we evaluated the availability of hospital beds, assisted living facilities, doctors, and dentists against the state’s senior population. These categories were equally weighted and normalized scores were summed.
