Well-run facility for memory care in central San Diego

Most residents suffer from dementia, so efforts to socialize--and the staff tries very hard--have limited success. Grand old house is built on several levels, so ramps and elevators are needed for walkers and wheelchairs. Heidi, the chef is wonderful--both in the quality of her cooking and in her uplifting attitude. Jim, the owner, is always cheerful and interested, and keeps the condition of this older mansion in good order. Grounds are berautifully landscaped, though under the adjacent airport jet landing path. Overall, a good value with a central San Diego location. Mother spent her last years here.

Lovely house, 1927. Staff is friendly, food smells delightful. They might push too much re socialization. Large single is only med sized..they discourage bringing your own furniture. Cost $5600 inclusive. Living room over looks harbor and airport runway...really nice grounds. TV cable available in all rooms, no telephone..would need cell phone or use house phone(done commonly)

Not the right fit

The staff was friendly at the Villa La Mesa. It is an older, smaller community. We were looking for something newer and had more activities for our loved one.

Overall Impressions

The facility is old, but seems to be fairly well maintained. It appears that they take care in keeping it clean. The staff is friendly and seems to be interested in the patients welfare. Costs were on the low side of those facilities we evaluated. Unfortunately, my brother passed shortly after moving in to the facility.

We felt it did not merit the rates they were asking. It's a very old building that must be difficult to maintain in a first class manner. Seemed dreary to us.

Larger home, 17 beds. Very nice neighborhood; house looks a bit run down but not too bad. More extensive activity schedule than other places seen to date. Also mentioned doing individual activities with residents depending on their interests. Staff= 4 in the a.m., 3 in p.m., 2 evening, 1-2 overnight depending on care needs of residents. Two stories - residents of upstairs rooms use chair lift to get to rooms; doors to stairway locked at night so no fall risk.* Private room $3800/month all included, no increase for additional services (including hospice). Also offers day care (1/2 day $45, full day $75) and respite ($125 overnight). House has dog, two cats, bird; residents can bring pets. One major impression is it's a lot of people - the sitting room had 10-15 people in it so it doesn't have the home-like feel of the other places I've been; definitely more institutional feeling although it's in a big house.

The experience did not live up to reviews

My 90 year old parents lived at Olivenhain Guest Home for a year and a half. Both had advanced dementia. My mother was frail and weak and was eventually put on hospice care. During that six month period the OGH caregivers were attentive and compassionate, although she fell 6 times during this period. One of the falls resulted in multiple bruises, a broken nose and pelvis. At which point hospice began to suspect neglect. My mom passed away, mercifully, in [Removed]. My father required less hands-on care. He did get a rash in early [Removed], and co-owner [Removed] took him to the dermatologist. In subsequent weeks the rash got worse but I was not kept up to date on how MUCH worse it got. He was bathed at least every other day, so the caregivers would have noticed. On [Removed], 3 months after the rash appeared, the dermatologist, on examination, discovered the rash had spread over his entire body, later to be diagnosed as scabies. Scabies is highly contagious, very difficult to cure, and is extremely uncomfortable. It is unfathomable to me why OGH did not bring this to my attention. During [Removed] there were several different people in the RN position. I found communication with the RNs, the med techs and myself to be inconsistent. I felt the need to be proactive in making sure doctors orders were followed. Compression stockings were prescribed to help the swelling in my dad’s legs, but were never applied. I would ask about this and not receive answers. In regards to the administrators in this facility, I found [Removed] to be honest and capable. Trudy seems to really care about the residents. As for the co-owners [Removed] and ex-wife [Removed], you’ll have to form your own opinions.

Dirty and Run Down

It was so dirty. Really run down. I would not put anybody in a place like that. It was not a good first impression at all. They had very few activities, if any, for the folks to participate in. There was no menu selection, just one option for meals and that's it. The person that we spoke with was a very nice young man but he just did not have a good product. I would not put my mother there.
